The spotlight’s been on since it launched, because hey, political football, but the truth is that demand-related catastrophes impacted all sorts of majors in 2013, from Sony and Microsoft’s respective online services when the Playstation 4 and Xbox One arrived, to Rockstar when it launched Grand Theft Auto Online on Grand Theft Auto V‘s heels (the game didn’t work as intended for weeks). This year wasn’t the first - and certainly won’t be the last - year we’ve seen company servers taken down by unanticipated consumer demand (or, for that matter, hackers simulating as much through saturation-based service assaults, the principle being the same). If you are having problems accessing the Nintendo eShop, we ask that you try again at a later time. Because of this, there may be times when some users will experience service disruptions to the Nintendo eShop. This has become a popular feature and the number of users creating a Nintendo Network ID on their Nintendo 3DS and accessing the Nintendo eShop has been greater than anticipated. The recent system update added the ability to link a Nintendo Network ID with a Nintendo 3DS family system. support page, Nintendo confirms the eShop “is experiencing service disruptions.” The company claims the problem is overwhelming demand for the service and says it’s “working to address these disruptions as quickly as possible.” I haven’t picked up my 3DS since last weekend, but when I powered it up a few minutes ago and tried to sign into the eShop, the halo of strobing lights cycled for four or five minutes before displaying an error code and a “please try again later” message. Yeah, if we were Nintendo we would surely make this a top priority fix and get a team working on this pronto. For the record, when Nintendo’s 3DS update dropped a few weeks ago, I had no problems pulling it down, connecting online, linking up with my Nintendo Network ID and going about my business. If you are under 18, you need a parent with a credit card and now you are not able to move the account off the unit it is created on, even if you have a good reason to do so or need to recover it on a new system. We have to think that it is high on their agenda to fix because it will be a very bad black eye for the console right out of the gate. We would also suspect that Nintendo Network IDs will be able to be moved at some point in the future, because consoles break down and people are going to want to move their account to their new Wii U and not have to create a new account.Īs for why this happened… only Nintendo knows. Nintendo is aware of the issue and admits that in the future you will be able to use your Nintendo Network Account on other devices, such as PCs. And now you will also not be logging into your Network ID on your friend’s Wii U. If you decide to sell your Wii U, then the Network ID is tied to that unit and goes with it, even if you wipe it, because it is tied to the console. If your Wii U is stolen from your house or apartment, tough luck, ‘cause you also lost your Nintendo Network ID. This also means that if your console dies, so does your Nintendo Network ID. What this means is that your Nintendo Network ID is locked and cannot be moved or logged into from another Wii U console. In what can only be described as a problem for Wii U owners, it has been uncovered that the Nintendo Network Account that you create on your Wii U is tied to that specific Wii U console.
